As Above, So Below
The stars and planets have always inspired a sense of wonder. Many cultures look skyward and see the face of the divine there. There’s a cosmic dance on the grand scale, and one on the intimate scale, going on for each of us. Astrology is the study of patterns and relationships — of planets in motion, our birth chart, synastry with others, the make-up of elements — and using that knowledge as a tool to find meaning.
Astrology is the study of the influence that distant cosmic objects, usually stars and planets, have on human lives. The position of the sun, stars, moon and planets at the time of people’s birth (not their conception) is said to shape their personality, affect their romantic relationships and predict their economic fortunes, among other divinations. Astrology can be used as a powerful and fun tool for understanding ourselves, others, and the world around us.
Astrology provides cosmic clues as to why you’re attracted to, repelled by or indifferent to those you meet. It helps you take personality clashes less to heart, but also show potential red flags to watch out for. Some connections are sparked by friction, and astrology helps you take the long view, and see them as challenges that cause you both to grow.
For centuries, humans have looked to the heavens for guidance. Astrology is, put simply, the study of the correlation between the astronomical positions of the planets and events on earth. Astrologers believe that the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the time of a person’s birth have a direct influence on that person’s character. These positions are thought to affect a person’s destiny, although many Astrologers feel that free will plays a large role in any individual’s life.
Is Astrology A Science?
It falls more in the category of metaphysics, the study of that which is beyond the physical. It’s similar to other fields that are founded on ancient theories of energy patterns, like feng shui, acupuncture, and yoga. Astrology at high levels is a mastery of its particular science and the intuitive arts. As the earliest known ordering of existence, long before recorded history, it’s been called the “Mother of all Sciences.”
There is no single unified theory or practice of astrology. Ancient cultures all practiced their own forms, some of which combined and evolved into today’s common western astrology. Eastern cultures continue to practice their own forms of astrology: Chinese, Vedic and Tibetan astrology are among the most well-known.
Astrology should not be confused with fortune telling, palmistry, psychic or tarot reading. Nor is modern western astrology a belief system like a religion.
Many skeptics insist on ‘irrefutable scientific proof’ before they can entertain the possibility of a connection between the celestial and the terrestrial. On the other hand, a few researchers believe they can ‘prove astrology’ with a single dramatic study. As will become evident both these positions are more about protecting their belief systems than investigative science.
So in a nutshell, astrology is the oldest system of a universal wisdom for self-knowledge and awareness as well as divination using natural phenomenon. Occultism is the study of hidden wisdom, and it has always dictated that what happens on one level of reality also happens on every other level; the microcosm and macrocosm behave alike.
How long have these types of astrology charts been around?
At Astrostyle, we work with the Western astrology system, which dates back thousands of years. Humans have tracked the movement of the heavens since civilization dawned. As far back as 6000 B.C. the Sumerians noted the journeys of planets and stars. Around 3300 B.C. the Babylonians (also known as the Chaldeans) began expanding upon what the Sumerians started, developing the first astrological system over thousands of years. They created the zodiac wheel that we use today (with planets and houses) around 700 B.C. The oldest known horoscope chart is believed to date to 409 B.C.
According to the science of Spirituality, destiny is that part of our lives which is predetermined even before our birth. All the major events in our lives are pre-destined such as the parents we are born to, the person that we marry or a life threatening disease we could have. Destiny is inherently a spiritual issue which cannot be comprehended by the five sense organs, the mind and the intellect.
Information about Zodiac Signs
Astrology maps the heavens at the moment of your birth, and in that map skilled astrologers can read the potential of your life. The study and conclusions of astrology are based on observation and experience dating back to the beginning of written history – 5300 years ago, and even earlier! Markings on bones and cave walls show that lunar cycles were being noted as early as 25,000 years ago.
Main branches of astrology
Regardless of astrological system, there are, in general, three main branches of astrology, especially traditional Western astrology that most of the world is familiar with.
Natal Astrology – this is the astrological branch that deals with a human’s life based on the person’s birth date, which in turn assigns him a horoscope based on the natal chart. The natal chart or horoscope refers to a map of the sky drawn for the moment of the person’s birth.
Mundane Astrology – deals with the life of large communities, like towns, cities, countries, entire nations, even the whole world. This uses a different astrological chart that will try to divine everything from financial turnouts, political climates, cataclysms like earthquakes or storms, and the general fate of the whole group.
Judicial Astrology – this branch of astrology dabbles into ancient magic, and deals with trying to figure out the best possible moment for various humane initiatives. It is full of mystery and its followers are tapping into ancient knowledge similar to that of the Mayans or ancient Mesopotamians.
How Does Astrology Determine a Horoscope?
The varied constellations and configurations we see shining across the black expanse are used in daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly divinations. Based on your birth chart (which reveals how the sun, moon, stars, and other planets aligned on the date and time of your birth), each day of your existence is further shaped by the current celestial patterns in our sky.
While the sign position of the Sun is meaningful, there is much more to Astrology than just the Sun. In fact, Astrology is just as delightfully (and sometimes maddeningly!) complex as people themselves. Besides the sign of the Sun, each person has a Moon sign, Mercury sign, Venus sign, Mars sign, and so forth.
Although astrology is not a religion, it offers comfort, faith and a deeper understanding of the world we live in. Interpretations often offer assurances of one’s future, but more importantly, they are supposed to show us a way to resolve our issues and to improve our relationships with our partners, family, and friends and mainly tools to meet ourselves and discover our own inner worlds in a different light.
Some People believe in astrology because others before them did and curiosity it a basic human nature, but the further drawn into astrology the more clear things become. The zodiac dates, the signs. We can associate zodiac signs to almost all aspects of our lives and we will see they are truly insightful and correct. Our horoscopes are unique and they can help us find and reveal our strengths, weaknesses as well as our natural qualities.
Astrology claims that nothing in life is coincidental and everything that happens to us happens for a particular reason. Astrology can provide us some good answers as to why these things happen to us and it guides us on our steps forward. In this way, astrology actually helps people to understand themselves and the world around them much better.
Astrology takes into account two major aspects – our birth potential and the effects of the planets and the stars on our personal horoscope. It can help us choose the right career and education path in order to make a good and successful life.
Astrologers believe in the maxim As Above, So Below. It means there is a direct relationship between the activities of the planets and human activity on earth. Most people see a relationship between full moons and human behavior; astrologers just see this phenomenon in much greater depth and detail. We are not sure why astrology works but we are certain there is a connection. There are many theories as to why, but science does not admit that there are forces in the universe that we still do not fully understand. It is possible that in the future we will discover why astrology works.
